Soon after our arrival from Santiago de Chile to Chicago, USA, we were struck by the sounds of one of the two apartments that accepted our papers. Everything in it creaked; sounds traveled and filtered through the enclosure, giving us intimate information about our neighbors, whether we wanted it or not. Our behavior was influenced by the space, leading to various interactions, both rhythmic and narrative. Although we live in the same structure and share the same walls, our stories are unique, and how we catalogue our lives are different.

Poco después de nuestra llegada de Santiago de Chile a Chicago, EE. UU., fuimos impactados por los sonidos de uno de los dos apartamentos que aceptaron nuestros papeles. Todo en él crujía; los sonidos viajaban y se filtraban por los espacios, brindándonos información íntima sobre nuestros vecinos, quisiéramos o no. Nuestro comportamiento se veía influenciado por el espacio, lo que provocó diversas interacciones, tanto rítmicas como narrativas. Aunque vivimos en la misma estructura y compartimos las mismas paredes, nuestras historias son particulares: la manera en que catalogamos nuestras vidas es diferente.
Esponjas/Espumas

“Esponjas/Espumas” is a live co-op installation and performance that relies on the active involvement of both the audience and the space. After gathering all the sonic ingredients, a recipe is created through a score of the room, upon which an improvisation is “baked,” resulting in the alteration of the environment and the people around us through unconventional listening procedures.

“Esponjas/Espumas” es una instalación y performance en vivo cooperativa: depende de la participación activa tanto del público como del espacio. Después de reunir todos los ingredientes sonoros, se crea una composición a través de una guía visual del espacio, sobre la cual se “hornea” una improvisación, resultando en la alteración del entorno y de las personas a nuestro alrededor mediante procedimientos de escucha no convencionales.

This piece depict the moments after being unjustly struck by something: a knife, a tooth, or an insult. All of this spills onto a piano that “plays by itself,” seeming to struggle for autonomy, when in reality, it’s being more controlled than ever. For that, I used a mixed technique of sending and returning MIDI signals, blending organic ideas played on the piano and then digitized, in contrast with completely quantized elements coming from the MIDI to the instrument.
This concert was curated by Sam Anthem and hosted by The School of the Arts Institute of Chicago and Experimental Sound Studio.

Esta pieza representa los momentos después de ser golpeado injustamente por algo: un cuchillo, un diente o un insulto. Todo esto se derrama sobre un piano que “toca solo”, pareciendo luchar por la autonomía, cuando en realidad está siendo más controlado que nunca. Para ello, utilicé una técnica mixta de envío y retorno de señales MIDI, combinando ideas orgánicas tocadas en el piano y luego digitalizadas, en contraste con elementos completamente cuantizados que van del MIDI al instrumento.
Este concierto fue curado por Sam Anthem y organizado por el School of the Arts Institute of Chicago y Experimental Sound Studio.
"Perceptual Spatial Sonic Measuring Device"

This object is created for the subjective measurement of how sound—and the physical components related to it—are reacting in a specific space. The goal is to generate a visual comparison based on the acoustic perception of what is being measured and the creative objectives that are being addressed. Therefore, this tool will allow for a graphical observation of how these elements behave. It can be used both by artists working with sound and by anyone who simply enjoy this type of experience.

Este objeto fue creado para la medición subjetiva de cómo el sonido, y los componentes físicos relacionados con él, reaccionan en un espacio específico. El objetivo es generar una comparación visual basada en la percepción acústica de lo que se está midiendo y los objetivos creativos que se están abordando. Por lo tanto, esta herramienta permitirá una observación gráfica de cómo se comportan estos elementos. Puede ser utilizada tanto por artistas que trabajan con sonido como por cualquier persona que simplemente disfrute de este tipo de experiencia.
